Since awarded the project earlier this year, Superior Lighting has been working hard on converting the Omaha metro area’s streetlights to LED.
To complete the project, Superior added multiple new trucks to its fleet. These trucks include three Altec AT48F bucket trucks, capable of reaching heights of 48 feet. Tailing the technicians in the bucket trucks, Superior has pickup trucks affixed with an advanced warning light system, similar to those used by emergency vehicles. These trucks are towing new, pull-behind traffic arrows.
The City of Omaha uses 100-watt High-Pressure sodium fixtures in residential areas and 200-watt High-Pressure Sodium fixtures on major thoroughfares. Those are being replaced by 54-watt and 108-watt fixtures, respectively. These fixtures will brighten up the street with whiter light while using nearly half the energy.
So far, Superior has completed 132nd street from “L” Street to Center and will continue to work on main roads as OPPD makes them available. Director of Operations, Greg Smith, said that “The progress so far is as we projected, replacing approximately 50-60 fixtures per day.”
